Social Security and the 1,040-Hour Limit

If you are a retiree who has reached full retirement age under Social Security, you may work an unlimited number of hours without a loss of retirement benefits.

If you are a retiree receiving Social Security benefits and have not reached full retirement age under Social Security, you may either:

work fewer than 1,040 hours in a calendar year Twelve calendar months commencing on January 1 and ending on December 31. or, if greater,
work the total number of hours at your hourly pay rate that would not exceed the following annual earnings limits*:
- $16,920 if you have not reached full retirement age under Social Security in the calendar year, or
- $44,880 for the months prior to reaching full retirement age if you will reach full retirement age in the calendar year.

The Social Security Administration annually establishes calendar year compensation limits for recipients of Social Security benefits. Annual changes to compensation limits established by the Social Security Administration are not effective for the PERS Chapter 238 Program (Tier One/Tier Two) until PERS amends its administrative rule and adopts the new limits.
