Long-Term Care Insurance

The PERS Board approved the addition of long-term care insurance as an option for PERS retirees beginning January 1, 2000. The long-term care insurance provider is UNUM Life Insurance Company of America.

Long-term care insurance is offered in a different fashion than other PERS health insurance programs. The insurer had to meet PERS requirements for policy coverage and characteristics, but retirees will deal directly with the insurer for coverage, premium payments, claims, and all other aspects of the plans.

The option to purchase long-term care insurance is available to all PERS retirees and their spouses, although some individuals may be denied coverage because of poor health. Premium rates will vary with the retiree's age. To apply, retirees and spouses must complete a short questionnaire covering the status of their health.

Information about the plans and their costs is available from UNUM by calling toll free 800-227-4165.

The state of Oregon is also offering long-term care insurance to state employees through UNUM. The Public Employees' Benefit Board (PEBB) arranged this coverage.
