If you die before retirement, PERS will pay the amount in your member account to your designated beneficiary The beneficiary named by a PERS member on a document filed and accepted by PERS.. In certain circumstances, the amount paid to your beneficiary will include an amount from your employer equal to the amount in your member account.
Your beneficiary must choose one of the following payment options:
If your sole beneficiary is a surviving spouse, they may be eligible for a fourth payment option:
Optional Spouse Death Benefit (OSDB)
If you have not designated a beneficiary at the time of your death, PERS will pay to the statutory beneficiary as of the date of your death. See the Beneficiary Designation page.
If your date of death is on or after January 1, 2024, and should your beneficiary die after you but before the money in your member account is disbursed, the benefit will be paid to your beneficiary’s estate.
If your date of death is before January 1, 2024, and should your beneficiary die before you or before the money in your member account is disbursed, the benefit will be paid to your beneficiary’s estate.
In the event of your death before retirement, a member or representative of your family must call PERS Member Services at 888-320-7377 toll free and report it as soon as possible. PERS will request a photocopy of the death certificate.
